Recommending products and the SalonInteractive app FTW!

Imagine a day in your life as a beauty pro (we like to do this every day - keeps us grounded). Racing out the door in the morning, your appointment schedule on your mind, which clients need what, kids activities to schedule, coffee to drink, more coffee, connecting with your colleagues and deciding who’s getting everyone more coffee. You’re busy AF.

And you love your clients. They keep the day energized, interesting, maybe a little emotional, definitely hilarious. You want things to be special for them - it’s their little hour of self care.

An essential part of that self care is knowledge of the products you use with your clients and would suggest they use at home to keep up they’re look on point. Sharing product knowledge is not salesly. It’s a necessary part of keeping clients looking amazing!

One important mantra to repeat each day to yourself could go as follows: My clients want my product expertise! 

Repeat your mantra as many times as you need to get it to stick. We aren’t kidding. Mantras make a difference.

Write it on the mirror.

Get a Ted Lasso style sign above the door.

Tattoo it on your forearm.

We realize, though, it’s important to acknowledge the anxiety a lot of stylists feel about discussing products during a service or even following up after the fact. That’s a legitimate concern. Your clients are special to you and you don’t want to turn them off with the wrong product sharing tactic and pushing spending more money down their throat. You want them to come back after all!

So let’s repeat that mantra (with a few more sips of that coffee, tea, matcha?): My clients want my product expertise! 

Notice those exclamation marks this time? Not a mistake.

When’s the right time to make those suggestions? Right there in the chair! What happens if you run out of time, it doesn’t feel right in the moment, or you just plain forget? Don’t worry, more on that later.

For the moment, let’s focus on being in the moment. When your client is there in front of you chatting about their day, catching up on the latest, it may seem counterintuitive, but that ultra-personal moment is also the best time to educate them about maintaining their beauty routine beyond the chair. You can’t be there to hold their hand and every client has been in the position of trying to recreate their stylist’s magic and just falling short…in some cases, really short 😅.

So yes, in between sharing the latest podcast they just have to listen to and complaining about the construction outside, give them a little educational nudge right as you’re using the product in their hair. 

Try a few of these out:

“OMG looooved that movie…So I’m starting with [fill in product here] because it helps your hair [do all of these amazing things]”

“Real quick before I forget, this product I’m using now is super important because [list some essential benefits here]”

“I saw that on Insta too and could not believe it. Okay seriously look how cute this turned out. I’m going to finish off with [this necessary product] because it helps with [A, B, and most of all C]”

Seriously, clients want to know. Don’t leave them in the dark. You discuss the cut and color, why wouldn’t you discuss the accompanying products that make it all last?

Ok back to that other pesky reality of suggesting products and educating clients about beauty health. Finding the time and remembering it all. Keeping track of all of the details for every client you see day in and day out is a lot.

There’s an app for that. (All credit to Apple for that phrase, don’t come after us, it’s just so catchy)
